It can be helpful to focus on anti-inflammatory foods (see Skin Nourishing as well as Digestive Support). It may seem surprising but there is a significant link between digestive health and respiratory health. There are also certain foods that can be helpful for reducing/helping with respiratory problems such as thyme and garlic. Reducing dairy foods during coughs and colds can be helpful as they are thought to increase mucus production.
BOOST: Oily fish, garlic, wholegrain rice, oats, dried fruit, peppers, green leafy vegetables, bananas, nuts and seeds, wholegrain rice, egg yolk, bananas and dark chocolate.
Thyme has a long history of use for coughs and helps to clear mucus. Add 1-2g of fresh thyme to hot water and give to your child to drink several times a day. Add thyme liberally to your cooking.
Honey has a soothing effect on the throat and is helpful to reduce coughing.
AVOID: Dairy foods (milk, cheese, cream, ice cream, yogurt) and soy, whole eggs (if relevant), shellfish, peanuts.
